72 hour truce still holding between Israel and Hamas. US general killed in Kabul. Im Ray Kouguell reporting from Washington.
The Israel-Gaza 72-hour truce is still holding. Israel withdrew its troops and both sides entered a ceasefire around 8:00 AM local time Tuesday. The Israeli troops have not gone far. Soldiers are in defense positions outside Gaza after destroying the last of 32 known tunnels the military says Hamas used in cross-border attacks. The Israeli troop withdrawal is a key demand of Hamas; its delegates are expected to arrive in Cairo over the next few days to negotiate a ceasefire extension with Egyptian and Israeli officials. Mark Regev is an Israeli government spokesman.
For Israel, the most important thing is that we shouldnt have to revisit this sort of crisis in half a year or a year. We could make sure that the peace is sustainable and lasting. And for us its crucial that Hamas should not be allowed to rearm, that they cant replenish their stocks of rockets and start digging their tunnels again. And so well be putting first as urgent preventing Hamas from rearming and ultimately the Palestinians have a written commitment that Gaza should be demilitarized. And its time the international community held them to that commitment.”

US officials identified the officer as Major General Harold Greene, a 34 year army veteran. He is the highest ranking US service man killed in action since the war in Afghanistan began in 2001. US and Afghan officials believe the shooting was an insider attack, in which Afghan soldiers turned their guns in US and allied forces. Ayaz Gul reports.

NATO and Afghan officials say the deadly attack is under investigation. A police statement quoted Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi as saying that a terrorist in an army uniform opened fire on both local and foreign troops. He added the attacker had been killed and several Afghan soldiers were also wounded in the incident. Most of those wounded in Tuesdays attack are said to be Americans. Germanys military says a German brigadier general was also injured, adding he was not in a life threatening condition. Afghan President Hamid Karzai has strongly condemned what is usually referred to as an insider attack in which local security forces turned on their NATO partners. Ayaz Gul for VOA News, Islamabad.
A second major airline has suspended flights to parts of West Africa because of the deadly Ebola outbreak in the region. British Airway is suspending flights to and from Liberia and Sierra Leone until August 31st. The Dubai-based airline Emirates suspended its service to Guinea on August 2nd. The three countries are the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak thats killed almost 900 people this year.
A second US missionary who contracted Ebola in Liberia arrived back in the United States Tuesday. Nancy Writebol traveled on a specially outfitted plane landing in the southeastern city of Atlanta, Georgia shall be treated in Emory University hospital, alongside an American doctor who also contracted the deadly virus while treating patients in Liberia.
President Obama says the United States is making a major long term commitment in Africa with 33 billion dollars in new investment. Speaking Tuesday at the US-Africa business forum in Washington, Mr. Obama said the new investment and financing commitment would support both African and American jobs. A bulk of commitments will come from private sector companies like Coke Cola and IBM. The three-day African summit ends Wednesday.
NATO says Russia significantly increases the number of troops on its border with Ukraine in recent days, bringing the total to around 20,000. A spokesman for Ukraines National Security and Defense Council Andriy Lysenko says Russia has deployed 45,000 troops to the border.
Chinese rescue workers continue the search for survivors and thousands of homes have collapsed following a powerful earthquake Sunday in the southwestern province of Yunnan. The death toll rose to 410 from the 6.1 magnitude quake
And rescue workers in Bangladesh went high waves and strong currents Tuesday in their search for the wreckage of a ferry that capsized with more than 200 passengers on board. More than 100 people are still missing. Im Ray Kouguell in Washington.
