From Washington this is VOA News. Egypt elects a new president and the results are made public. And Turkish officials say Syria was wrong to shoot down its jet. It will seek international support. I’m Marti Johnson reporting from Washington.
Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi has been declared the winner of Egypt’s presidential runoff. A huge cheer went up from Tahrir Square where supporters of Mr. Morsi had gathered at the announcement. Mr. Morsi defeated former Mubarak-era Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq. Egyptian officials have deployed extra security forces to Cairo streets and key state institutions ahead of the announcement of the election results. Over night both sides had demonstrated and chanted for their candidates. But with Morsi has emerged as the winner, he does, however, gained fewer powers than the candidates had expected when the army promised to hand over power to civilian rule by July 1 after the military rulers disbanded the newly-elected parliament.
